GURGAON: Traffic snarls at Rajiv Chowk may soon become a thing of the past, with NHAI planning to open the right U-turn underpass near the roundabout to traffic by June 30. The flyover at Maharana Pratap Chowk,is also likely to become operational in July.
Both the U-turn and the flyover are part of the ongoing three underpasses project on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway. Once operational, the 708m two-lane U-turn underpass that starts from Medanta-The Medicity hospital in Sector 38 and ends just 150m ahead of Rajiv Chowk, will offer a signal-free ride to the Jaipur-Delhi side of the highway.
At present, vehicles coming from Choudhary Bakhtawar Singh Road, Sectors 39, 40, 38, 42, etc, have to travel all the way to Rajiv Chowk, take a U-turn from Sohna road to return to the junction, and then take a right towards Delhi. The right U-turn will ensure vehicles get direct link to the other side of the highway.
Th underpass is expected to reduce travel time as well as traffic snarls on the stretch. The current 20-30 minutes commute between Choudhary Bakhtawar Singh Road and Jaipur-Delhi side of NH-8 will be reduced to just 5-10 minutes. Moreover, traffic from Delhi-Jaipur lane towards Rajiv Chowk is also expected to reduce by 50%. Similarly, the flyover passing over Maharana Pratap Chowk, will cut down traffic on Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road in Sector 14.
The original deadline for the entire project is May 2019. So far, only 30% of the construction work of the entire project, which includes the right U-turn, flyover and the three underpasses at Iffco Chowk, Signature Tower and Rajiv Chowk, has been completed.
"NHAI will make the flyovers and underpasses accessible for commute as and when they are ready. The project will ease congestion on roads ," said a senior NHAI official.
