The flyover is part of a 5 km long stretch that is meant to provide connectivity between Subhash Chowk on Sohna road and Badshahpur.
A section of an “elevated road” being constructed on Gurgaon’s Sohna road collapsed on Saturday night, with officials saying there were no casualties in the incident.
According to police, the incident took place around 10 pm. Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said they were still trying to determine the reason for the collapse.
“The span of that section of the road had already been laid and completed; the casting and stressing had also been completed. We will have to investigate this to find out why it happened. Maybe there was overstressing or understressing of the stretch, but it is too early to say anything decisive on this,” said an official from NHAI, adding that the structure fell within the barricaded section of the under-construction project.
The flyover is part of a 5 km long stretch that is meant to provide connectivity between Subhash Chowk on Sohna road and Badshahpur.
Construction had started on the structure in 2018, and officials had, at the time, touted it as the second most expensive project for the district, after the Dwarka Expressway. It is being constructed at a cost of Rs 707 crore and is part of a larger project being executed by the NHAI, which also includes converting the stretch between Subhash Chowk and Sohna into a six-lane road.
“A section of the elevated road collapsed around 10 pm. There were no fatalities, but we know so far that two labourers have sustained injuries. Further investigations are being conducted,” said ACP (Sadar) Aman Yadav.
Residents of the area, meanwhile, spoke of an “explosion” and tremors that they felt as the structure came down.
“I was playing football downstairs with my friends — it was 9.56 pm — when we suddenly heard a loud explosion and felt tremors. Everyone in the building came out into their balconies, and several residents even came downstairs, mistaking the tremors for an earthquake. When we rushed to the main gate of our complex, we saw that an entire section of the flyover had come crashing down,” said Junaid Singh Behgal, a 16-year-old resident of Vipul Greens, a gated condominium located next to the construction site.
Haryana Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala offered reassurance that the matter was being looked into. “There have been 2 injuries and both have been admitted and under treatment. NHAI team, SDM and civil defence team are at site,” he tweeted.
