News: Income Tax survey flags over 35,000 Badshahpur property deals worth Rs 55,000 crore as unreported or wrongly reported-09-10-2026
A survey by the Income Tax Department’s Directorate of Intelligence and Criminal Investigation (I&CI) found major gaps in reporting of high-value property deals at Badshahpur tehsil, Gurugram: more than 35,000 transactions worth over Rs 55,000 crore were not reported or were reported incorrectly.
The survey, at state land revenue offices, is part of a check on how Tehsildars and Naib Tehsildars report such deals. Cases included details never furnished and wrong Permanent Account Numbers (PANs). The department clarified that Rs 55,000 crore is the combined value of affected transactions and does not itself suggest tax evasion; tax implications will be examined after verification.
Officials compared the state’s property registration records with Statements of Financial Transactions (SFTs) sent to the department and found omissions and wrong PANs, which make it hard to match deals with taxpayers. They will check whether wrong PANs were errors or deliberate attempts to hide identities.
The findings are part of wider scrutiny in Haryana, where the directorate has run similar surveys over the past year, and the Principal Director General of Income Tax (I&CI), New Delhi, wrote to the Haryana chief secretary seeking corrective action.
The state had promised a centralised SFT filing system for 2025-26, with filings due by May 31, 2026. The department says filing has worsened: only around 45 of about 140 Tehsildars had filed at the latest review, against over 120 on time the previous year.
The directorate is expected to keep verifying the flagged deals and following up on pending and inaccurate filings. The exercise could have wider implications for Gurugram, where rapid development and high-value deals make it a focus of tax scrutiny.
