News: Yamuna City flat buyers to get refunds with interest from Sunworld Vandita after 14-year delay-05-10-2026
The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has ordered the Sunworld Vandita Group to refund buyers of its Sector 22D housing project in Yamuna City, who have waited 14 years for their flats.
Under the August 31 order, the builder must return the entire deposited amount with 12 per cent interest within two months, failing which the rate rises to 15 per cent a year. It must also pay Rs 25,000 to each buyer as litigation costs.
The bench of AVM J. Rajendra (retd.) and Justice Saroj Yadav turned down the builder’s plea that farmers’ protests and land litigation caused the delay. It said that once the builder had advertised the project and taken buyers’ money, securing approvals and compliances was its responsibility.
Sanjiv Gupta, promoter of the Sunworld City project, told HT that the principal has already been repaid and the interest is now being paid in compliance with the order.
The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) allotted the land in 2011, and about 1,400 buyers booked flats in 2012. Delivery was due around 2017, but buyers who found no construction at the site approached NCDRC in 2018. Of 91 original petitioners, 27 withdrew, leaving 64, who had sought a full refund with 24 per cent interest, Rs 2 lakh for mental harassment and Rs 5 lakh in litigation costs.
