News: Viral post: Renter tallies Rs 3.52 lakh outlay before moving into a Gurgaon rental-09-05-2026
A social media user who left a corporate job has set off a debate on the hidden costs of renting in Gurgaon by tracking every rupee spent on finding a 2BHK. The person claimed to have spent Rs 3.52 lakh before spending a night in the new home, and said the expense went well beyond brokerage.
The tenant said the flat, rented at about Rs 90,000, cost Rs 82,000 or more to find. This included Rs 45,000 in brokerage, Rs 4,200 on Uber rides to visit properties, Rs 3,100 on food, Rs 400 on calls and data, and Rs 10,000 in token money that was lost. Taking three days of paid leave to look for a place cost another Rs 20,000. Adding the security deposit of Rs 1,80,000 and the first month’s rent of Rs 90,000 brought the total to Rs 3,52,000.
The tenant also described the search as exhausting. Of more than 15 brokers contacted, at least 80% had never been inside the flats they were showing, the photos were over two years old, and a third of the listings were already rented. One flat had a tree outside the window that blocked sunlight during the day, which the tenant noticed by chance.
