News: GNIDA and ISRO’s NRSC to build AI and satellite-based system to detect land encroachments-28-02-2026
Greater Noida is set to get an artificial intelligence-based system that uses high-resolution satellite imagery to monitor encroachments, officials said on Friday. It aims to allow early detection, scientific assessment and timely action against illegal encroachments.
The National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO will build it together with the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA). An MoU was signed in New Delhi on Thursday. Officials described it as the first initiative of its kind, meant to improve transparency and accountability in land management.
NRSC will develop the AI monitoring models, a digital dashboard and an alert mechanism for long-term use. Greater Noida authority CEO NG Ravi Kumar said encroachment is an environmental and planning issue as well as an administrative one, and that scientific monitoring can strengthen the protection of public assets. He called the project a step towards technology-enabled governance.
Additional CEO Sumit Yadav, who leads the project, said combining AI with satellite monitoring will improve the authority’s ability to prevent and act on encroachments, shifting the system from reactive enforcement to a proactive, data-driven one.
GNIDA officials at the signing included general manager (projects) A K Singh and manager Abhishek Pal. Officials said such tools could become important as cities grow and land pressure rises, especially in environmentally sensitive and peri-urban areas, and that the model could serve as a blueprint for other districts and development authorities.
