News: Dust Persists on Gurugram Roads as MCG Deadline Nears-01-10-2026
With three months left, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram’s (MCG) plan to make 294 roads dust-free by December 31, 2026 is being questioned by residents and environmentalists, who say several key stretches remain coated in dust.
The 2026 action plan, seen by HT, lists nearly 50 kilometres of key stretches month-wise for dust control, but the same stretches reappear after one or two months. MCG has not said how many of the 294 roads have been made dust-free.
Roads still affected include Kadipur School-Umang Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Artemis Road, Old SPR, Kataria Chowk, Vatika Chowk, Atul Kataria Chowk, St Xavier’s School-Badshahpur Road, Sector 57-Vatika Chowk and Bus Stand Road. Near St Xavier’s School on Golf Course Extension Road, trucks raise dust at the signal and two-wheeler riders cover their faces.
BB Vij, a resident of Sector 66, said the stretch from Vatika underpass towards Ghata is among the city’s worst, and students and parents pass through it daily.
Ruchika Sethi, founder of Clean Air Bharat, said citizens already identify sources, document violations and submit representations, but sustained, measurable enforcement is the missing link. She called for a preventive, outcome-based system in place of complaint-driven responses.
Gauri Sarin, founder of Making Model Gurugram, blamed construction activity, unwashed tyres and uncovered trucks carrying sand and debris, as well as illegal dumping of construction and demolition waste. She said the pace of civic work is too slow.
Residents also pointed to broken roads. Around 217 kilometres of road revamp is pending against a 396-km target. The city has 13 anti-smog guns against a requirement of 22, and 24 of the required 72 mechanical road sweeping machines (MRSMs). The MRSM requirement comprises 38 large, four medium-sized and six small machines.
An MCG official, asking not to be named, said tenders for more machines have been floated and coverage will improve once they are deployed. On repeat listings, an official said dust removal is not a one-time exercise and needs daily sweeping, so stretches appear twice or thrice in monthly lists.
