News: Rao Inderjit Proposes Sirhaul Lake for Monsoon Water-21-09-2026
Rao Inderjit Singh, Gurugram MP and union minister of state, wants an artificial lake built on more than 20 acres of Haryana tourism department land near the Sirhaul border, to curb waterlogging and recharge groundwater.
His September 11 letter to chief minister Nayab Singh Saini said he had spoken with IIT, Gandhinagar, experts and a private consultant engaged by Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority. Singh told HT that around 20 acres at Dhanchiri camp could store monsoon water, which now floods areas and drains to the Najafgarh drain, "which is a waste." Runoff from Nathupur village, DLF Phase-3 and nearby colonies could be channelled there. He blamed rapid urbanisation and encroached natural drains for worse flooding in Nathupur, Dundahera, Udyog Vihar and DLF areas.
He also proposed lakes on waterlogged farmland at Daultabad, Dhankot, Kherki Majra and Chandu, paying owners annual compensation. Citing NITI Aayog, he said groundwater depth rose from 18 metres in 2004 to 38 metres in 2025, with extraction reportedly 212% in 2024, and sought satellite mapping and restoration of natural drainage channels.
