News: Home Purchase Tops Young Investors’ Goals: Anarock Survey-21-09-2026
Buying a home is the leading goal for investment gains among younger Indians, with Gen Z and Millennials putting property ahead of other uses despite rising housing costs and high interest rates, according to the Anarock Real Estate Homebuyer Survey.
Overall, 45% of respondents said they plan to use investment gains to buy a home. Starting a business came next at 25%, followed by building an emergency fund at 17% and retirement at 11%. Only 2% named vacations as a key goal. The survey suggests real estate remains an important end-use even for investors now putting capital elsewhere, which could support future housing demand.
The split by generation is sharp. Millennials, broadly those born between 1981 and 1996, were the most likely to choose a home, at 71%, with another 21% opting to start a business. Among Gen Z, generally those born between 1997 and 2012, 49% preferred a home and 39% a business.
Gen X, generally born between 1965 and 1980, was more balanced, with 44% choosing a home and 23% a business. Baby boomers, generally born between 1946 and 1964, leaned towards financial security: 45% would build an emergency fund and 25% would save for retirement, while only 21% would buy a home and 8% would start a business.
The survey said the findings show a life-stage divide, with younger investors focused on home ownership and entrepreneurship and older ones on security and retirement.
