News: Rs 5.88 Crore Sensors to Trace Sewage Into Yamuna-19-09-2026
Flow meters, surveillance cameras and online water quality analysers are to be installed on Gurugram’s primary storm-water drains under a Rs 5.88-crore plan by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to pinpoint where untreated sewage and industrial effluents enter the Yamuna, senior officials said.
The project covers Master Storm Water Drain Legs I, II, III and IV and the Manesar Drain, with completion targeted by January next year. A tender document issued on Thursday, seen by HT, gives the contractor three months to install the equipment, followed by five years of operation and maintenance.
Planned equipment includes 10 non-contact radar level sensors with surface velocity sensors, 10 solar power systems and 10 pan-tilt-zoom cameras with 40-day cloud backup. Six analysers will give real-time readings of BOD, COD, Total Suspended Solids and pH. Data will feed into the GMDA command system and the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) portal.
The move comes amid National Green Tribunal (NGT) directions restricting untreated discharge. HSPCB estimates in April showed nearly 150 million litres per day of untreated sewage and toxic effluent entering the river from the district, after which the NGT directed the Haryana chief secretary to formulate immediate interventions.
A senior GMDA official, requesting anonymity, said the devices would map wastewater volumes and identify the catchment clusters or industrial belts responsible. GMDA will then act with MCG, MCM, HSVP and HSIIDC against erring units and plug illicit sewer connections. Officials said the equipment would also flag blockages early so mobile pumps can be deployed.
