News: GMDA Warns Societies: Run STPs or Lose Sewage Connection-17-09-2026
Gurugram: Group housing societies, licensed colonies and commercial establishments must keep their sewage treatment plants (STPs) operational or risk having their sewage connections cut, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) said on Thursday.
CEO PC Meena issued the directions at a meeting with departments including the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Gurugram Metropolitan Rail Limited (GMRL), Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) and municipal corporations. A GMDA statement said the meeting reviewed the working of STPs, treated wastewater quality and sewage discharge onto roads during the monsoon.
Meena said HSPCB will penalise establishments that do not comply in the stipulated time, and GMDA will disconnect connections if corrective steps are not taken.
HSPCB officials said STPs are mandatory at 175 premises in north Gurugram and 179 in south Gurugram. Inspections found non-operational plants at 33 premises in the north and eight in the south. In north Gurugram, penalties of around Rs 14 crore have been imposed, of which Rs 4 crore has been recovered.
Meena directed that developers with unpaid penalties get no consent or permission for other projects until dues are cleared. He ordered surprise inspections at 15 premises with HSPCB, with sample reports sent directly to him.
Treated water from GMDA-run STPs will be tested regularly, and operating agencies could be blacklisted if even one sample fails, he said. Awareness meetings with resident welfare associations and developers are also planned.
