News: NHAI Starts Rebuilding Iffco Chowk Road Over Sinkhole-15-09-2026
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun restoring the road at Iffco Chowk where a sinkhole opened on August 25. Officials said the bitumen layer should be laid in two days if it does not rain again, but gave no date for reopening the stretch. That will depend on further inspection and a review of the repair after the subsurface treatment and filling are done.
Work started on Saturday. An NHAI official said the cavity is being filled in layers with soil and substrate material, each layer is given time to settle, and the whole fill is being rolled to strengthen the subsurface. Officials said they want to treat the surface properly so the incident is not repeated.
The repair was held up by intermittent rain over the past two weeks. Regular spells kept filling the sinkhole, and workers had to dewater it and wait for the soil to stabilise.
The sinkhole formed when a portion of a sewage drain collapsed on the service lane from the Delhi to Jaipur side, causing panic and congestion. Two service lanes were barricaded. Officials said the line runs under the road from MG Road towards Rajiv Chowk on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) took nearly one and a half weeks to repair the pipeline because heavy sewage flow slowed the replacement. A GMDA official said the damaged pipe has been replaced and the adjoining pipeline repaired. The authority has also begun identifying all damaged sewer pipelines for repair.
The official added that the entire pipeline from Iffco Chowk to Sikanderpur, which is in bad shape, will be repaired using machine-wound spiral lining technology.
