News: GMDA to Audit Tau Devi Lal Stadium After Wall Collapse-08-09-2026
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) said on Monday it will commission a third-party structural audit of the whole Tau Devi Lal stadium complex in Sector 38, a day after part of the projection wall of the cricket pavilion collapsed. No timeline was given, and officials said higher authorities will issue directions on appointing the agency.
Around 50 feet of the projection wall came down on Sunday morning. Nobody was hurt. As an immediate step, GMDA will demolish the entire projection wall of the pavilion, though no date has been fixed.
A senior GMDA official said the audit will cover the cricket pavilion, athletics stadium and sports hostel, and its recommendations will be implemented. Movement of sportspersons in and near the pavilion has been restricted. Debris has been cleared and unsafe portions will be removed, he said, adding that no sportsperson was near or under the pavilion at the time.
Asked about the cause, the official said the structure is more than two decades old and recent rain had weakened it.
The stadium is one of Gurugram’s largest government-owned sports facilities. It was developed by Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran and later handed to GMDA. The complex also has a synthetic athletic track and a hostel.
GMDA is finalising the tender to upgrade the stadium at an estimated Rs 634 crore, a figure to be settled after approval from the competent authority. The official said existing pavilions will be strengthened and retrofitted during the overhaul.
