News: HSPCB Proposes Rs 34.5 Lakh Penalty for Sector 70 STP-05-09-2026
Environmental compensation of Rs 34.5 lakh has been recommended by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) for two Sector 70 societies sharing a defunct sewage treatment plant (STP), officials said on Saturday. Nothing has been levied; the file reached the Panchkula head office last week for approval, a senior HSPCB official said.
A resident complained that untreated domestic waste ran onto public roads in the monsoon. A joint inspection on June 30 found the plant, on one society’s premises, non-operational. Both hold a valid consent to operate (CTO) until September 30, 2027. Inspectors also saw structural changes and demolition by the local residents’ welfare association (RWA), harming operations further.
HSPCB wrote to the Department of Town and Country Planning (DTCP), asking the District Town Planner (DTP) to check structural integrity and ensure urgent repairs. Show-cause notices were issued earlier this year; the official could not confirm the month.
