News: 36 mm Rain in an Hour Slows Gurugram Traffic-05-09-2026
Heavy rain on Saturday afternoon brought relief from humid heat in Gurugram but left several areas waterlogged and traffic crawling. As much as 36 mm fell within one hour.
The downpour caused light to moderate waterlogging in key areas and on connecting routes. Traffic volume surged on the Delhi-Jaipur highway right after the rain, and vehicles inched along from Sarhaul Border to Rajiv Chowk and Subhash Chowk. Two-wheelers and three-wheelers struggled on waterlogged roadsides.
Rajiv Chowk, Sohna Road, Golf Course Extension Road, Udyog Vihar and roads around Sector 14 were the worst affected. Commuters said water filling potholes on Udyog Vihar Phase 3 and Old Delhi-Gurugram Road raised the risk of accidents and forced drivers to slow down.
Traffic police were deployed at major intersections and vulnerable spots to divert vehicles and clear jams. Because of rain and waterlogging in Delhi, Gurugram Traffic Police advised Delhi-bound motorists to take a U-turn at IFFCO Chowk and enter through the Aya Nagar border, and those going to the airport to use the Dwarka Expressway.
Teams from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram and the district administration drained water with suction pumps.
According to the India Meteorological Department, intermittent rain is likely in Gurugram and nearby areas over the next 24 to 48 hours because of an active monsoon trough and a low-pressure area. It warned that waterlogging in low-lying areas could worsen if heavy rain continues.
The district administration asked people not to leave home unless necessary, to avoid waterlogged roads, underpasses and low-lying areas, and to stay away from trees, electricity poles and overhead power lines.
Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh, as Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, directed all departments and emergency response agencies to remain alert.
