News: Bengaluru Draft Parking Rules Offer Property Tax Waiver-05-09-2026
Owners of vacant plots in Bengaluru who build dedicated multi-level parking on their land may get a 100% property-tax incentive under proposed parking rules meant to ease the city’s parking and traffic problems.
According to media reports, the Karnataka government has proposed a 100% exemption from property tax and service charges for vacant plots developed as multi-level car parking (MLCP) or mechanised parking facilities. Vacant sites used for regular surface-level parking could get a 50% exemption.
The proposal is part of the draft Greater Bengaluru Authority (Parking) Rules, 2026, which aim to increase off-street parking and reduce dependence on public roads. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has invited suggestions and objections until September 10, according to a Network 18 report.
The reports said the incentives could matter to owners of unused or underdeveloped land, whom the government wants to encourage to offer it for organised parking so that vehicles do not occupy roads and footpaths.
Bengaluru has more than 1.28 crore registered vehicles, and an estimated 15 lakh to 20 lakh vehicles registered elsewhere are also regularly used in the city, the report said.
The draft also proposes a structured, fee-based on-street parking system, with charges varying by the type and location of the road. Residents who park on the street outside their homes would need annual permits, reportedly costing Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 a year depending on the vehicle category.
Authorities are also considering parking restrictions on roads that are already severely congested, the report said.
