News: Gurugram Police to Keep Buses Ready for Flood Rescue-03-09-2026
Gurugram police will keep a fleet of police buses on standby to carry school students stranded by waterlogging after heavy rain, police said.
Police commissioner Sibash Kabiraj issued the directions at a meeting he chaired late Wednesday. Every police station must also prepare an "emergency response plan" for rain, waterlogging, fire and other disasters.
Kabiraj said 12 to 20 police buses will be kept ready, and that police will coordinate with schools and the district administration to send them where children are trapped.
The move follows August 24, when at least 14 private school buses were stuck together at waterlogged Subhash Chowk on Sohna road and students were stranded for four to six hours.
A senior police officer said the force’s fleet includes conventional high-floor, wide-body buses with high ground clearance and bigger tyres that can cross flooded roads without the engine stalling. School buses have low clearance and small tyres, he said, so water enters through the exhaust and shuts the engine.
Police officials put the ground clearance of their conventional buses at 260mm to 280mm, against 180mm to 230mm for school buses. The height is sometimes raised further by adjusting the suspension, a police lines official said.
On August 25, deputy commissioner Uttam Singh had drawn up a plan under which traffic police would share real-time information on waterlogged routes with schools and Haryana Roadways would earmark spare buses.
