News: MCG to Run Drain Simulation Model on Flooding Hotspots-01-09-2026
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) will map catchments and drains at Subash Chowk, in internal sectors and in licensed colonies to trace how rainwater runs off and where the drainage network is blocked, officials told HT on Monday.
MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya told HT that the drains are already mapped and a simulation model will show how water moves through the network and which drains need repair or more capacity. Officials said work on the model has begun. No timeline, cost, agency or number of drains and catchments has been shared.
Dahiya said the civic body prefers ecological solutions to underground tanks at this stage, and wants to recharge groundwater by diverting water into rainwater harvesting systems.
Last week, MCG officials said they were working with experts from IIT Gandhinagar on storage and recharge options at waterlogging-prone spots. Dahiya said injection wells of 48 to 80 litres per second were being considered, which he said would raise capacity to three times the rainfall volume expected in the monsoon. Officials said IIT Gandhinagar had identified 273 locations for rainwater harvesting systems.
Stormwater lines will also be laid in narrow lanes that lack drainage and in low-lying areas.
The steps follow the flooding of August 24, when 75 mm of rain brought the city to a standstill and school buses and vans were stranded for more than four to five hours at Subash Chowk and Sheetla Mata Mandir.
