News: Iffco Chowk Sewer Leak Found After Three Days-28-08-2026
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) on Friday located the leak behind the sinkhole at Iffco Chowk on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, after nearly three days of pumping out sewage.
Officials said excavation has begun around the damaged section of the sewer pipeline and steel-plate shuttering will be installed so the road does not cave in further. Replacing the pipeline and repairing the road should take another five to six days.
A senior GMDA official said the heavy sewage flow meant that, despite five pumps running since Tuesday evening, it took almost three days to pinpoint the leak.
The sinkhole formed on Tuesday afternoon when part of the sewage drain collapsed along the service lane from Delhi towards Jaipur. Two service lanes were barricaded.
According to the authority, 20 metres of damaged pipeline beneath the sinkhole will be replaced immediately, and another 100 metres towards MG Road will be strengthened using MWSL (machine wound spiral lining) technology. GMDA also plans to upgrade the entire line between Iffco Chowk and Sikanderpur at an estimated cost of around Rs 9 crore.
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials, who are working with GMDA on the road repair, said they expect the work to finish soon now that the leak has been identified.
Separately, GMDA has floated an Rs 8 crore tender to rehabilitate, with MWSL technology, the master sewer pipeline between Bakhtawar Chowk and the Sector 46-47 crossing, which was laid almost two decades ago and is in poor condition. Tenders have also been floated for desilting sewage drains in sectors 49, 50, 65, 66 and the Sector 66-67 area, the official said.
