News: Iffco Chowk Sinkhole Repair Delayed by Heavy Sewer Flow-27-08-2026
Repair of the sinkhole at Iffco Chowk on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway could not start on Wednesday because of heavy sewer flow, and GMDA officials expect to begin on Thursday morning once the spot is dewatered.
A portion of the sewer drain on the service lane from Delhi towards Jaipur collapsed on Tuesday afternoon, after which the two service lanes were barricaded.
A senior GMDA official, requesting anonymity, said three tractor-mounted pumps and two stationary pumps were working continuously. Given the very high flow, it was decided to divert the sewer line on Wednesday night.
An inspection on Tuesday night found that the drain coming from MG Road towards Iffco Chowk had collapsed. The official said this old drain had earlier given way near the L-shaped underpass on MG Road.
After temporary repairs to restore traffic, GMDA will upgrade the pipeline from Iffco Chowk to Sikanderpur using MWSL (Machine Wound Spiral Lining), a trenchless technology that creates a new, structurally sound pipe inside the old one. The official called it cost effective and said a tender would be floated within a month.
GMDA CEO PC Meena said the entire sewer pipeline on MG road would be surveyed in detail to find a permanent solution.
NHAI officials at the site said the stretch was fully barricaded and they were waiting for the sinkhole to dry. Once work starts, a large portion of road around it will be cut and the areas adjoining the drain repaired.
