News: IIT Gandhinagar Experts Study Gurugram Flood Fix Sites-27-08-2026
For a lasting fix to repeated waterlogging, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) had IIT Gandhinagar experts assess key problem sites on Wednesday, officials said. Professors Vivek Kapadia and Udit Bhatia toured Subhash Chowk and Rajiv Chowk to review drainage and options for heavy-rain overflow, briefed by MCG additional municipal commissioner Yash Jaluka, Ward 29 councillor Kuldeep Yadav and GMDA executive engineer Amit Godara.
The idea is high-capacity underground tanks plus injection wells at selected spots. Rain would be held in the tanks, then sent through the wells to recharge groundwater, handling stormwater near its source instead of relying only on drains and pumping. Tanks would temporarily hold water in downpours and ease pressure on existing drains.
MCG officials said the injection wells would take 48 litres per second to 80 litres per second, moving water underground quickly. Capacities are being set site by site from waterlogging levels and rainfall patterns. The design also proposes Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) technology linked to the Central Ground Water Board for real-time water-level monitoring.
