News: Iffco Chowk Sinkhole: Old GMDA Sewer Line Collapses-26-08-2026
A master sewer line collapsed beneath the service road at Iffco Chowk on Tuesday, leaving a 10-foot by 10-foot sinkhole on the Delhi-Jaipur side, officials said. The cave-in came a day after torrential rain flooded the city.
The dilapidated line, managed by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), runs along the service road from Ambience Mall to Rajiv Chowk. GMDA executive engineer Bhim Arya said the collapse occurred around 3 pm and the spot was barricaded. Repairs would begin on Wednesday morning, when a detailed inspection would also establish the exact cause.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) closed the two service lanes. Traffic officials said congestion on Tuesday evening eased once vehicles were diverted. NHAI officials said commuters can take a parallel service lane towards Manesar and Signature tower crossing and then head to the Millennium City centre metro station.
In a statement, NHAI said water had accumulated in the sinkhole and preliminary findings suggested possible leakage or failure of the sewer line had eroded the soil and collapsed the road crust. An NHAI official said GMDA had been told to repair the drain immediately, calling the sinkhole a hazard to nearby structures.
The same line had collapsed in 2021 just 100 metres away, when a large portion of the drain under the flyover gave way and, NHAI officials said then, the flyover’s retaining wall collapsed.
