News: Land Hurdles Stall Gurugram Metro Phase One-21-08-2026
Four houses in Saraswati Enclave and a Haryana City Gas CNG station are among the obstacles holding up Gurugram’s first-phase metro line, and Haryana chief secretary Anurag Rastogi on Friday asked agencies to speed things up. Addressing officials of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), the district administration and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at the high-powered committee’s fifth meeting in Chandigarh, he sought faster land acquisition and priority removal of utilities along the carriageway.
Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) needs about 14,000 square yards of private land in Kanhai, Islampur and Basai for the depot, stations and track, yet this has barely moved for months. A senior government official said the deputy commissioner, who leads the land purchase committee, and the HSVP administrator must settle land matters urgently. An HSVP official said two owners, in Islampur and Basai, have agreed to sell, whereas many others hesitate, ask for steep compensation or want metro jobs instead. Some have asked for time, he said, adding, "We are trying to expedite the process."
Rastogi also told Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) to hand over to GMRL the land of the 220kV Sector-33 substation, which sits inside the depot site. NHAI was told to remove hurdles between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk. The Saraswati Enclave case comes up in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on August 31, and the CNG station matter on August 24. A senior NHAI official said an electricity substation on the alignment should be moved by December 31, legal issues are to be resolved by month-end, and a proposal for forest department land in Sector 10 has been submitted. A GMRL official said deadlines depend on acquiring land and shifting utilities first.
