News: GMDA Bulldozes 425 Sheds, 225 Ramps on Supreme Court Orders-11-08-2026
A 15-km sweep from Atul Kataria Chowk to Sheetla Mata road on Tuesday saw the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) enforcement wing pull down around 425 illegal sheds, 225 ramps and 50 carts, officials said. Work was still going on that evening. It came after the Supreme Court’s August 4 directions asking civic agencies to clear illegal encroachments from roads and public spaces.
RS Bhath, district town planner, enforcement, GMDA, said teams worked in Sector 7, 9, 9A, parts of Railway Road and the Atul Kataria Chowk to Rezangla Chowk section. Illegal access roads in Sector 7 and 9 were shut, and in Sector 90, 93, 81 and 86 several illegal boundary walls were demolished. Sheds put up by shop owners and residents, unauthorised vending structures and green-belt encroachments were removed. "There was some public resistance," Bhath said, but owners agreed, "albeit reluctantly", once told of the court directions.
Satender Kumar, assistant town planner, said sheds on Sheetla Mata road in several places jutted 10 feet to 15 feet into public space, and some ramps sat very high above road level.
Twelve field teams, 36 officials and 14 earthmovers took part. GMDA CEO PC Meena said the cleared sections will be watched to stop re-encroachment and debris will be carried away quickly.
