News: Flooded Roads, Shut Underpasses Hit Gurugram, Faridabad-08-08-2026
Waterlogging and traffic jams continued in parts of Gurugram and Faridabad on Saturday, a day after heavy rain disrupted Delhi-NCR, although rainfall eased to light showers.
District administration data showed Faridabad received 54mm between 8am and 5.30pm on Saturday and Gurugram 19mm. The same data put rainfall in the last 24 hours at 684mm for Faridabad and 771mm for Gurugram. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Gurugram recorded 172mm in the 72 hours till Friday and another 96.5mm till 8.30am on Saturday, when Faridabad’s figure was 120mm.
Traffic was slow on Sohna Road, the Delhi-Jaipur highway and parts of Golf Course Road. Sohna Road resident Ritika Jain told HT that water built up over days of rain made driving difficult, especially in the evening. Santosh Yadav of Sector 71 said he took almost an hour from MG Road to Civil Lines. A Ballabhgarh resident said drainage lines could not handle the volume.
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) sent sanitation teams to clear blockages and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) carried out drain maintenance in Sector 59. The Gurugram deputy commissioner urged residents to work from home. The IMD issued a yellow alert for the district, forecasting rain in patches on Sunday.
In Faridabad, Friday’s rain inundated more than 50 roads. Traffic police closed the Old Railway Station, NHPC and Mewala Maharaj underpasses, which officials said held around 20 feet of water. Police spokesperson Yashpal Verma said water is being pumped out but they will stay shut for safety.
A school bus and a Toyota Fortuner were stuck in the Old Railway Station underpass. Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA) executive engineer Om Dutt said the Fortuner, driven by a 60-year-old man, was pulled out with cranes around 1pm on Saturday. The bus was removed at around 4pm. Dutt said it had entered before waterlogging began and broke down, and the driver left to find a mechanic. No children were on board.
The flooding recalled September 13, 2024, when Punyashree Sharma, a private bank manager in Gurugram, and Viraj Dwivedi, a cashier, died after their SUV was trapped in the Old Faridabad underpass.
