News: Rain Collapses Sector 22 Stormwater Drain in Gurugram-06-08-2026
Heavy rain on Tuesday evening caused a 30 to 35-foot section of the Leg-I stormwater drain along Major Sushil Aima Road in Sector 22 to collapse. A vendor’s cart fell in and several vendors ran for safety, but no one was hurt.
GMDA officials said on Wednesday that the spot has been barricaded to protect traffic on the busy road. Temporary restoration is expected to start on Thursday and take two to three days.
Rakesh Malik, president, Sector 22 Market Welfare Association, said the brick walls gave way on both sides around 5pm after the drain flooded, and the slab on which fruit sellers traded also caved in. Resident Pawan Kumar said the drain, dilapidated between Old Delhi Road and Tau Devi Lal Park, also gets choked and that vending on it is dangerous.
GMDA executive engineer Vikram Singh said the MCG has been asked to remove vendors from the site. The damaged part of the brick-lined drain, originally built by HSVP, will be reconstructed and the rest strengthened with lining. GMDA also plans a parallel drain beneath the road to add capacity, support the upcoming metro corridor and tackle waterlogging.
