News: IKEA Wants 22 More India Stores by 2030 Near Transit Hubs-04-08-2026
IKEA, which recently opened its eighth India store at DLF Avenue in Saket, South Delhi, is aiming for 30 stores by 2030 and will favour locations near metro stations and other public transport hubs, Patrik Antoni, CEO India, told Hindustan Times Real Estate.
Antoni said the Swedish furniture retailer has opened eight stores since its first in Hyderabad in 2018 and hopes to add another 22 over the next four years. Being close to public transport, he said, is a sustainable way to bring customers and co-workers to stores so that "not everybody has to drive".
Where it will expand
Delhi-NCR will stay one of IKEA’s largest focus markets, with several more stores planned. Bengaluru is to be the second hub, and Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai are also priorities. The company is already in Pune and is evaluating Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow and Faridabad.
IKEA is also developing two Ingka Centres, mixed-use projects that combine an IKEA store with a shopping centre, offices and hotels. It confirmed that Gurugram (2027) and Noida (2028) remain on schedule. Both will have direct metro access. The Noida centre will sit at the interchange of the Delhi Metro and Noida Metro networks, with commuters passing through a shopping centre housing around 200 retail stores, an IKEA outlet, offices and a hotel.
Formats
The retailer will keep using several formats instead of depending only on its large ’Blue Box’ stores. Antoni said shopping habits have changed with online retail, and the Saket store shows the IKEA experience can be delivered compactly inside a mall, where people also come to spend time and dine.
City stores of around 25,000 sq ft will mostly be in malls, while larger stores with extensive room settings and restaurants are planned for Noida and Gurugram. IKEA already runs a 70,000 sq ft city store in Worli, Mumbai, and plans a 7,000 sq m standalone store in Bengaluru.
On the existing network, Antoni said the Bengaluru store connects directly to the metro station, the Hyderabad store is close to the metro and the Mumbai store is near the train station.
Current footprint
The Saket outlet, opened on July 30 and spanning about 30,000 sq ft, is IKEA’s second Delhi store and fourth city-format store in India after Worli, Pune and West Delhi (Pacific Mall, Subhash Nagar). It came a year after the company began e-commerce in Delhi-NCR.
IKEA has been in business globally for more than 80 years and has sourced from India for over five decades. Its eight stores are spread across Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and Delhi, alongside a Plan and Order Point in Bengaluru and distribution centres in Pune and Gurugram. Online sales contribute around 30% of the India business.
