News: Leg 2 Storm Drain Stretch to Be Widened in Gurugram-31-07-2026
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will widen part of the Leg 2 storm water drain to tackle waterlogging in residential sectors and on arterial routes from Signature Tower to Maharana Pratap Chowk and on to Sheetla Mata Road.
Officials said a 5km stretch of the 21km drain will be widened at an estimated Rs 20 crore. Sheetla Mata Road saw heavy waterlogging after rain on July 7 and 28.
Vikram Singh, executive engineer, GMDA, said the drain will be widened from Signature Tower crossing to Bhimgarh Khairi. Its present width is 2.5 to 3.5 metres, and the aim is to double capacity to 5 - 7 metres, depending on space along the carriageway. A consultant will be appointed shortly for a feasibility study.
Singh said the work would prevent waterlogging in sectors 27, 28, 25, 43, 29, 16, 14, 17, 18, 3, 5, 6 and 12, as well as Rajiv Nagar, Sheetla Colony and Ashok Vihar.
A senior GMDA official said major waterlogging on Sohna Road, at Narsinghpur and near Rajiv Chowk has largely been resolved, and the next challenge is flooding in residential areas and open spaces along Leg 2.
Officials said strengthening work has already been done on the nearly 800-metre stretch between Atul Kataria Chowk and Sheetla Mata Mandir, where several illegal sewage connections were removed and desilting was carried out. A major overhaul of the whole drain is now planned.
The drain starts near Chakkarpur and runs through Millennium City Centre, Sector 27/28, MDI Chowk, Atul Kataria Chowk/Sheetla Mata Road, Sector 5, New Palam Vihar, Northern Peripheral Road and Daultabad before ending at the Najafgarh drain.
Earlier this year GMDA completed the Leg 4 drain along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), which officials said has prevented waterlogging along Sohna Road and adjoining sectors.
