News: Shankar Chowk Decongestion Plan Shelved as RRTS Design Firms-27-07-2026
A plan to ease traffic on the 1.5km stretch between Shankar Chowk and Shyam Chowk on the Delhi-Gurugram (NH48) expressway has been put on hold by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) because of the proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor, officials said on Sunday.
HSIIDC had invited bids in April for the Rs 19.8 crore project, which involved widening service roads from 7 metres to 14 metres, reversing one-way circulation from Jaipur towards Delhi, improving turning geometry and moving pedestrians to a multi-level foot-over-bridge (FOB). The tender was withdrawn once RRTS planning reached its final stages.
A senior HSIIDC official, requesting anonymity, said the proposal was put on hold after the government cleared the RRTS station layout in March, and the final design will match the station’s layout and projected traffic demand.
Surveys show nearly 4,000 vehicles and 1,000 pedestrians use the interchange every 15 minutes at peak hours.
A nearly 640-metre multi-level FOB linking Cyber City Metro Station and Atrium Place partly addresses pedestrian safety. Traffic police data shows 24 crashes since 2023, with 10 deaths and 22 injuries.
