News: Snapped 66kV Line on NH-48 Causes 16-km Jam in Gurugram-18-07-2026
A 66kV transmission line running across the Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH48) collapsed at Narsinghpur on Saturday afternoon, holding up vehicles on both carriageways over 16 kilometres, from the Kherki Daula toll plaza to Star Mall near Sector 15. Police said the line came down at around 3.30pm and traffic returned to normal by around 6pm.
Power department officials said the supply tripped automatically when the line fell, which averted harm to commuters.
Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPNL) said the line links the 220kV substation in Badshahpur with the 66kV substation in Harsaru. An HVPNL official said one of three conductors at a tower near the expressway broke, possibly because of overloading and temperature change. The wires were cut and removed to reopen the road, and the line was to be reinstalled at night. The Harsaru substation continued to receive power from alternative sources.
Emergency vehicles, traffic police and civil defence teams barricaded the stretch with stacks of tyres, closing both carriageways and the service lanes. Diversions were set up, including one via the Kundli-Manesar Palwal Expressway and a 19-kilometre route via Sohna Road and Southern Peripheral Road.
Assistant commissioner of police (traffic headquarters) Satyapal Yadav said traffic was diverted for at least two hours between Panchgaon at the Govi exit near Kherki Daula and Rajiv Chowk, with vehicles rerouted from Vatika Chowk. Several connecting city roads also jammed, and extra personnel were deployed.
Arun Singh, heading towards Manesar, said he was stuck for more than an hour a kilometre short of the spot, with no way to take a U-turn or reach the service lane. Commuters said at least five ambulances were caught. One ambulance driver, who did not wish to be named, said he was trapped for almost two hours on his way to a patient and asked the family to make other arrangements.
The breakage hit 10 feeders connected to the 66kV substation. The New Sector-35 and New Shani Dev industrial feeders were restored by shifting load to another substation. Six independent and two industrial feeders stayed affected because of maintenance on the Badshahpur circuit, and the SPR Road (Urban), Begampur Khatola (Urban), Suzuki (Independent) and Lenskart (Independent) feeders also remained disrupted.
