News: 33 of 40 Flagged NH-48 Spots Repaired in Gurugram-14-07-2026
Footpaths, green verges and traffic islands along the Delhi-Gurugram (NH-48) corridor at Rajiv Chowk, Jharsa and Signature Towers have been upgraded over the past two months, with 33 of 40 deficient locations fixed, according to a National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) report.
The locations were identified in May during a joint inspection of an 11km stretch by NHAI, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). Footpaths, central verges, crash barriers, bollards and lane markings were found damaged or poorly kept.
The report recorded broken crash barriers and littering between the main carriageway and service lanes at Rajiv Chowk. Nine locations had damaged footpaths, 12 had green verges needing maintenance, 15 had poor sanitation and littering, and 19 had damaged or inadequate safety infrastructure. Improper traffic channelisation at the Jharsa intersection confused motorists.
NHAI officials said work between May and June included footpath restoration at seven locations and safety improvements, such as replacing crash barriers, at 15. Green verges at nine locations are under daily monitoring, with plantation, protection and painting in progress. A contractor at Rajiv Chowk said seasonal plantation is complete on at least half the roadside patches there and at Jharsa.
The inspections were part of a beautification drive under the Clean City Action Plan 2026 to add green cover, remove encroachments, improve safety and cut emissions. The campaign began after chief minister Nayab Singh Saini inspected works at the three sites on April 26.
A senior NHAI official said the Signature Towers exit, Sector 31 service roads and Jharsa will get pedestrian and commuter safety upgrades in the coming weeks, with phased work at all pending spots. Upgrades are also planned at MDI Chowk, Atul Kataria Chowk and Sheetla Mata Road, and MCG sanitary teams have been told to step up checks on littering.
The effort belongs to a wider programme running since 2021, when GMDA identified 106 junctions for pedestrian-friendly upgrades. Approved projects since include smart traffic signals, a 64km footpath revamp, four flyovers, nine foot overbridges and a six-lane elevated corridor along NH-48.
