News: 20 Pipeline Leaks Delay Sector 72 Boosting Station-07-07-2026
The Sector 72 boosting station will not be operational by the end of July as planned, after tests revealed around 20 major leaks in a master water pipeline laid in 2013-14, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officials said. The station is meant to supply water to sectors 58 to 74.
A GMDA official said the 18-km pipeline from the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant to the station, along Dwarka Expressway and Central Peripheral Road (CPR), had never been used. Work to operationalise it began last year and testing started two months ago. Leaks were found between the plant and Krisumi Residences on CPR.
Further checks showed that pipes are not joined, with gaps of four to five inches. Repairs will take time, the official said, and the government has been informed.
Asked why the line lay idle for over a decade, the official said land acquisition problems stopped nearly 500 metres from being laid near CPR. The matter is under arbitration between the contractor and Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), and the pipeline was never formally handed to GMDA.
The Rs 200 crore station has a capacity of 262 MLD. GMDA has written to HSVP to fix deficiencies, have the contractor finish pending work, and carry out testing and commissioning.
HSVP awarded the tender on December 6, 2012, for about Rs 144 crore with a 21-month deadline. GMDA took over the master water network in 2018. A senior HSVP official said the letter had not yet been received and the matter would be looked into.
