News: NHAI Upgrades Four Accident-Prone NH-48 Gurugram Links-05-07-2026
Four accident-prone approaches to the Delhi-Gurugram (NH 48) expressway, at Jharsa, Atlas, Iffco Chowk and Sector 33, have been reworked over the past four months, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has said. The work follows February inspections by the district’s Road Safety Committee (DRSC).
A safety audit had marked them as "high-risk stretches", citing unregulated median openings, poor pedestrian infrastructure, faded markings and missing signage. An action taken report (ATR) covers work done between March and June and what remains.
Officials said low-cost measures such as signage, streetlights and footpath repairs began within a month of the audit. Medium-term works, including alternate parking and speed-calming, started in June.
At Jharsa Chowk, where three fatal crashes killed seven people between 2023 and 2025, concrete barriers now block expressway access points, and markings, signage and lighting under the flyover have been improved. A senior official said zig-zag barricades in service lanes and retro-reflective indicators are also planned.
At Atlas Chowk, where six fatal crashes killed seven people, delineators, warning signboards and resurfacing are complete. Transverse bar and ghost island markings are pending.
Iffco Chowk and Sector 33 will get bus bays, truck lay-bys and off-road parking as long-term measures, to be executed by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority and the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram. Crash barriers have been repaired, while speed cameras and electronic enforcement remain under consideration.
