News: Only 114 km of Gurugram’s 264.4-km Footpaths Built-23-06-2026
More than half of Gurugram’s planned footpaths do not yet exist. Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officials said 114km of the 264.4km network is ready, leaving over 150km to be built.
Pedestrian infrastructure has drawn fresh attention since the Supreme Court ruled on June 19 that every citizen has a fundamental right to walk on a demarcated footpath.
Officials said fewer than 50 percent of roads have the standard 1.8-metre-wide footpath and only two percent have dedicated 2-metre-wide bicycle tracks, as GMDA’s 2024 report "Right of Way (ROW) Management" also noted.
Executive engineer Amit Godara said footpaths are being built with new road projects and existing ones repaired. Another executive engineer, Faizal Ibrahim, said 35km will be constructed this year.
Residents allege many stretches have broken walkways or none, and that footpaths on arterial roads are encroached upon or blocked by vehicles. Savita Devi, 64, of Sector 46, said pedestrians are pushed onto the road even near metro stations, and two-wheelers use footpaths to skip signals.
Sarika Panda Bhatt, road safety expert and co-founder of the Raahgiri Foundation, said Gurugram is not a walkable city and needs continuous, connected footpaths, which could also reduce waterlogging.
