News: DMRC Tables Airport Express Extension Options to Gurugram-23-06-2026
Two draft detailed project reports (DPRs) for taking the Airport Express Metro Line into Gurugram were placed before the 65th board meeting of the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) in Chandigarh on Monday. Haryana chief secretary Anurag Rastogi chaired the meeting.
Prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), one option extends the line from Yashobhoomi station to Rajiv Chowk on NH 48, and the other from Dwarka Sector 21 to Sector 21 Gurugram. Both have been shared with HMRTC and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
A senior HMRTC official said both DMRC proposals recommend underground construction. At a meeting held under the union housing ministry, it was suggested that the two alignments be combined, with stations at Bijwasan and Kapashera. HMRTC’s own proposal, a line between Rezangla Chowk and Dwarka Sector 21, is the third option under consideration.
The official said ridership studies have been done and the routes compared. The ministry will take the final decision and the line will be built as it directs.
All three ideas are more than a decade in the making. The Yashobhoomi-Rajiv Chowk option grew out of a 2015 DMRC proposal to reach IFFCO Chowk, approved in principle in 2016 and then shelved. It was revived in 2025 and updated this year with the alignment ending at Rajiv Chowk. The Dwarka Sector 21-Gurugram Sector 21 option also stems from the 2015 DPR, was considered in 2016, revived in 2025 and formally presented in its present form on Monday. The Rezangla Chowk link dates to 2011. Its DPR was approved by the Haryana Cabinet in 2022 and revised earlier this year.
The board was also told that the final DPR for the Sector 56 Gurugram to Panchgaon corridor, a 35.25 km elevated route with 28 stations, is complete. HMRTC managing director Chander Shekhar Khare said in a statement that it has been submitted and is being placed before the chief minister for approval.
The revised DPR of the 136.3 km Delhi-Panipat-Karnal Namo Bharat Corridor, estimated at more than Rs 33,000 crore, was reviewed as well. Khare said it already has approvals from the Public Investment Board and the Haryana government.
HMRTC reported a surplus of Rs 9.18 crore for January to May 2026, against a deficit of Rs 1.98 crore in the same period last year. Khare said Rapid Metro ridership in Gurugram grew 9.41%, with more than 8.07 million commuters in the first five months of 2026 compared with 7.38 million a year earlier.
