News: Water Line Leak During GMDA Work Chokes Sohna Expressway-19-06-2026
A leak in water supply pipelines along the main Gujjar Road in Sector 66 caused around six hours of recurring jams on Friday, with queues stretching up to a kilometre on both Sohna carriageways, traffic police and commuters said.
Officials said the leak occurred at around 7.30am during utility shifting by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), leaving the intersection ankle-deep in water. Congestion set in at around 8am as traffic picked up. An HT spot check at around 11,30 am found restricted movement and long waits on the stretch linking the Sector 66 main road to the expressway, with barricades around the repair site and police directing vehicles manually. Traffic police said the congestion cleared after 12.30pm.
A traffic enforcement official, requesting anonymity, said barricades were extended to restrict movement through the single merging point on Sohna Road.
Commuter Aditya Singh, 29, said vehicles piled up over 1km from a private memorial hospital to a Government Boys Senior Secondary School, and that such work could have been done late at night. Another commuter, Maha Dev, 23, said wrongly parked vehicles narrowed the road further.
A senior GMDA official, who did not wish to be named, said the work involved connecting a higher-capacity trunk line to the distribution network to prevent shortages at societies. Some pipeline segments were realigned urgently owing to land availability, the official said, adding that leakages were likely to be fixed within a day.
Contractors at the site said nearby societies had reported supply disruptions for almost a week. One denied that a pipeline had burst, attributing the waterlogging to the release of trapped water and pressure build-up in the network.
