News: Sohna Road Carriageway to Reopen; NHAI Seeks Rs 58.27 Crore-18-06-2026
Temporary repairs to the damaged sewer line on Sohna Road near SD Adarsh Vidyalaya are almost complete and the main carriageway should be restored within 10 days after inspection, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said on Wednesday. For permanent rehabilitation of the line between Rajiv Chowk and Sheeshpal Vihar, it has sought Rs 58.27 crore plus GST from state agencies.
A portion of the road collapsed on May 5, after which two lanes were barricaded. A senior NHAI official said the repair will be inspected in the next couple of days to see how the drain holds, and the road will be fixed within the following week if it works.
NHAI headquarters has approved the permanent work, to be done as a deposit work of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). In a June 5 letter seen by HT, regional officer Mohammad Safi said the competent authority had directed that NHAI take up the CIPP works on condition that the state government bears the cost. The letter asked for the amount to be deposited at the earliest. A GMDA official said the proposal is under consideration and it has already been agreed that GMDA will pay.
The 30-year-old line, laid by HSVP, has caused six cave-ins. The first was near SD Adarsh Vidyalaya on December 24, 2023, and a 12-foot sinkhole followed on July 2, 2024. Three more occurred between 2024 and 2025, and after the fifth on July 2, 2025, NHAI agreed to take up repairs. The latest sinkhole widened to nearly 20 feet two days after the collapse.
GMDA officials said the line runs about 20 feet below the Rs 2,000-crore highway and carries sewage from sectors 45 to 51 to the Behrampur treatment plant. All six cave-ins were on the same 22-km stretch between Subash Chowk and Sheeshpal Vihar near Raheja Mall.
