News: Chandu Budhera Fifth Filtration Unit Now Due July 15-15-06-2026
The fifth 100 MLD filtration unit at the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant will start operating by July 15, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) said on Sunday, pushing back the deadline once more. The unit will raise the authority’s treatment capacity from 670 MLD to 770 MLD.
Executive engineer Abhinav Verma said the electricity wing is carrying out work at the unit, which should be completed soon.
The commissioning date has slipped several times. GMDA first said March 2025, then January 2026, May 2026 and June 2026. The authority currently runs four units of 100 MLD each at Chandu Budhera and three of 90 MLD each at Basai.
A fourth unit of 100 MLD is planned at Basai. Verma said financial bids for that tender have been opened and the work will be awarded soon.
GMDA officials put the city’s present water demand at around 800 MLD against a supply of approximately 670 MLD. The gap is met by tankers and borewells arranged by various agencies and developers. Demand is projected to reach around 1,170 MLD by 2031. Verma said more filtration units and tanks are planned so that capacity touches 1170 MLD in 2029 itself.
The supply network is also being extended in new sectors, with works in sectors 58 to 74 and 75 to 80 expected to be finished by the end of June. Verma said the pipeline from Chandu Budhera to the Sector 72 boosting station is being tested and will be functional soon, after which water will reach sectors the authority did not cover earlier.
