News: GMDA Orders STPs Finished in 18 Months, Reuse Treated Water-10-06-2026
All sewage treatment plants (STPs) under construction in Gurugram must be completed within 18 months and tenders for proposed ones issued at the earliest, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) directed its officials on Wednesday. They were also told to ensure 100 percent use of tertiary treated water within six months.
CEO PC Meena gave the directions at a review meeting attended by GMDA officials, project contractors and users of tertiary water, which is wastewater that has passed the third and most advanced stage of purification. He stressed that none of it should be diverted to drain number 8, which comes from Rohtak.
Meena said 143 million litres (MLD) of tertiary treated water from the Dhanwapur STP is used for irrigation every day, and around 70 MLD from Behrampur is reused for industry, groundwater recharge and upkeep of green belts, parks and water bodies.
A senior official present said tenders are to be floated early for the planned plants: 100 MLD at Dhanwapur, 100 MLD in Sector 107, 100 MLD in Behrampur and 40 MLD in Manesar. GMDA is currently building a 90 MLD tertiary treatment unit at Behrampur STP and a 75 MLD plant at Dhanwapur. A spokesperson said both will be completed by August 2027, and another official said no extensions will be given.
The meeting also decided to explore supplying treated water to fire stations, with hydrants and distribution planned in advance.
The directions follow recent orders by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that a detailed action plan and execution dates be fixed for all Yamuna Rejuvenation Project works in the NCR.
