News: Only 150 of 408 Gurugram Rainwater Pits Desilted-02-06-2026
With the monsoon approaching, nearly 64% of Gurugram’s rainwater harvesting pits are still clogged, according to Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) data. Officials said 150 of the 408 existing systems have been cleaned and work on the other 258 is in progress.
Zone 1 has had 66 pits desilted and zone 2 has cleared 28 of 47. In zone 4, 32 of 107 are done, while zone 3 is slowest with 24 of 121. Priyadeep Soni, junior engineer (horticulture), MCG, said the target is to finish all pits by the end of June.
The MCG has identified 155 waterlogging hotspots where work is being done on priority. They comprise 41 hyper-critical locations where water stands for more than five to six hours, 54 medium-priority sites and 60 minor points where it stays for an hour. IIT Gandhinagar, the corporation’s partner on waterlogging, has identified 200 more flood-prone locations.
Under Phase 1 of an ongoing initiative, 207 new pits are being installed across the four zones. Seventy are complete and the project is estimated to finish this month. Additional commissioner Yash Jaluka said community parks, road verges and other vulnerable areas needing more pits were identified using data gathered with IIT Gandhinagar.
Ajit Punia of Block A in Greenwood City said the block floods every monsoon because it has no harvesting pits. The MCG has assured residents the matter will be taken up, he said, but it seems too late for this year. Ashwani Dabara of Sector 45 said only two to three pits in the sector have been cleaned, and not properly.
