News: 1,900 km of Haryana NCR Roads to Be Redesigned-01-06-2026
About 1,900 kilometres of roads wider than 12 metres in seven NCR cities of Haryana, including more than 350 kilometres in Gurugram, are to be redesigned to curb dust and congestion, following National Green Tribunal (NGT) directions issued last year, officials said on Sunday.
The Urban Local Bodies Department has shared road details for Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad, Karnal, Rohtak, Sonipat and Panipat with the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) and Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), which will jointly prepare the plans. The seven cities have a combined network of 10,132 kilometres, and width was the main criterion for shortlisting.
Hemant Kumar, chief engineer, headquarter, Urban Local Bodies Department, Haryana, said a memorandum of understanding with the two institutes will be signed soon and their report is expected in three months. The study will cost Rs 12.5 crore. Funds for the redesign itself will be arranged by the respective state agencies, with December 2027 as the deadline.
In Gurugram, 292 kilometres of the identified roads are with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), 35 kilometres with the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), seven with the Public Works Department (PWD) and 23 with the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP).
Kumar said bare strips will be planted with native shrubs recommended by experts and uniform road geometry will make mechanised sweeping more efficient. A road asset management system, RAMS, will be introduced for preventive and predictive maintenance. Officials said end-to-end paving will remove bare earth and unpaved shoulders, a major dust source.
Roads identified in Gurugram include Old Delhi Road, New Railway Road, Jharsa Road, Civil Lines Road, Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and major sector roads. Faridabad’s list has Prahladpur Border-Badkhal Road, Sector 18 to Sector 12 Dividing Road, Gonchi Drain to Sohna Road T-Point and the Sector 77-71 Corridor. Karnal’s includes Sector 7 internal roads, Noor Mahal Chowk, Geeta Chowk and Kunjpura Road.
In Rohtak, Old NH-10 Delhi-Hisar Road, NH-352/Jind-Hisar Bypass stretches and the Mini Bypass are among those listed. Sonipat’s list covers internal roads in Sectors 12, 13 and 15 and DCRUST-CIPET Road, and Panipat’s has Radha Swami Road, Yamuna Enclave, Barsat Road and the Babail Naka area. In Manesar, the focus is on master sector roads built by HSIIDC and major GMDA roads.
The exercise follows a December 26 inspection of 125 Gurugram roads by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), which found excessive dust on 34, moderate dust on 58 and low dust on 29, with only four free of airborne dust. The NGT then directed that roads in the seven cities be made dust-free.
