News: Gurugram to Install 40 Flood Sensors by June 10-30-05-2026
Forty sensors will be put up across Gurugram by June 10 to improve flood prediction and drainage planning, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) officials said on Friday.
Twenty flood-depth sensors will go to critical waterlogging points identified by the civic body, and 20 more will be placed along major sewer lines to detect overflows and speed up monsoon response. Additional commissioner Yash Jaluka told HT the devices are solar-powered. He said the MCG knows which locations flood but lacks precise data on water depth, which the sensors will provide.
The MCG has identified 153 waterlogging hotspots and IIT Gandhinagar a further 200. The two have partnered on the pilot phase of "Rain-to-Resilience", a technology-driven flood prediction and urban water management system. Desilting and cleaning are complete at 55 of the 153 hotspots and continuing at the others, officials said. The deadline has been moved from May 31 to June 15.
The corporation’s website, mcg.gov.in, now lets residents view waterlogging-prone areas and report flooding. Jaluka said users can indicate approximate depth using visual references such as an auto-rickshaw, car, person and bike. A photograph is mandatory with every report, and residents may also upload images from last year and from recent rain.
Separately, about 1,600 electric poles in waterlogging-prone areas will be covered with PVC pipes to prevent current leakage. Officials said 400 poles have been identified in each administrative zone and the tender has been awarded.
