News: GMDA Greens Gurugram Junctions with Miyawaki Forest-26-05-2026
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has begun greening and beautifying major intersections, including Atul Kataria Chowk, Mahavir Chowk and Rajiv Chowk, officials said on Monday. Similar work is on at Jharsa Chowk and Kanhai Chowk.
Shrubs, plants and grass are being planted on roundabouts and green islands, with stone and other fixtures on the periphery. An official said the species being planted across green belts and junctions include Amaltash, Gulmohar, Kachnar, Spathodea, Tabebuia Rosea, Pilkhan, Ficus Shiela and Ashok Desi.
Executive engineer Amit Godara said the work covers plantation drives, turning earthen patches into green pockets, painting kerbstones and fencing green belts against encroachment. These junctions carry heavy traffic all day and are exposed to heat, pollution and urban heat island effects, which more greenery would reduce, he said.
Around Rs 1.5 crore is being spent at Atul Kataria Chowk on plantation, pillar beautification and landscaping. At Rajiv Chowk, about Rs 1 crore of corporate social responsibility (CSR) funding will go into plantation, landscaping and fencing of green islands. At Mahavir Chowk, a Miyawaki forest is planned at around Rs 50 lakhs, with completion by June 15, Godara said.
Green belts along 45km of roads are also being cleared of malba and debris, then levelled and lowered to serve as green drains during the monsoon.
