News: DIAL Study Urges Dwarka Expressway Extension to Mayapuri-25-05-2026
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has studied traffic around Indira Gandhi International Airport and proposed major road and transit projects for the Delhi-Gurugram corridor. Its report, reviewed by HT, finds airport-bound vehicles make up only 13-17% of NH-48 peak-hour traffic while 83-87% is through traffic between Delhi, Gurugram and other NCR regions, so regional jams delay airport passengers.
Titled "Area-Wide Decongestion Strategy – Transport Connectivity Master Plan of Delhi Airport", it was presented to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) in the first week of March. A GMDA official said a stakeholders’ meeting is set for Monday after a May 12 date slipped, with broader issues to be discussed.
The study says Delhi connectivity remains limited to NH-48, with no parallel route, since Old Delhi-Gurugram Road and Dwarka Expressway merge back into the highway. NH-48 and Old Delhi-Gurugram Road both operate at Level of Service (LOS)-F, signalling forced flow and extreme congestion on an A-to-F scale. Even with the 29-km Dwarka Expressway, which NHAI built for Rs 10,000 crore, peak-hour jams persist near Shiv Murti, the Mahipalpur junction and the Kherki Daula cloverleaf. The report warns that Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, Diplomatic Enclave, Bharat Vandana Park, Bijwasan Railway Station, Dwarka Stadium, the Integrated Freight Complex and housing along the expressway will add pressure.
Its main recommendation is extending Dwarka Expressway to Ring Road in Mayapuri so central Delhi traffic can bypass Mahipalpur and the airport. Others are the Barapullah extension up to Mahipalpur, the UER-II extension, the Rangpuri Bypass, the Greater Southern Peripheral Road (GSPR), a Rezang La Chowk elevated flyover and a Taalkatora-Barapullah link. It also urges fast-tracking the Gurugram metro, the metro spur from Rezangla Chowk to the airport line, the DMRC Golden Line extension and the Delhi-Alwar RRTS. Together these could divert nearly 55% of NH-48 traffic and lift its LOS from F to C by 2033. Sanjay T-Point, Mahipalpur Bypass and Shiv Murti Junction are named as major bottlenecks.
Another GMDA official said a Rezangla Chowk flyover towards Dwarka Expressway is on hold pending a decision on the metro spur to Dwarka Sector 21, while GSPR roads are state-approved and HSVP is acquiring land. A senior NHAI official tied to the expressway said he knew of no extension proposal.
