News: Sector 72 Substation Fire Blacks Out Gurugram-23-05-2026
A fire at the 220kV power substation in Sector-72 caused a major blackout in Gurugram on Friday night, Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPNL) officials said.
Sectors 15, 18, and 38 to 57 were affected. The rapid metro stopped mid-journey and passengers had to walk along the tracks to the nearest station. The substation powers half the city, and seven more substations draw electricity from it. Officials expected it to take several hours to bring it back online.
Kushal Kumar Sarkar, HVPNL superintendent engineer, Gurugram, said extreme heat caused the current transformer on one of three main Power Grid Corporation of India Limited circuits feeding the substation to explode and catch fire. The fault affected other circuits as well, and the outage lasted 60 to 90 minutes, he said.
Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited officials said supply was back in most of the affected area by 11.30pm, with complete restoration likely to take a couple more hours.
DMRC said Rapid Metro services were unavailable from 7:50pm to 8:33pm. Yellow Line services ran normally through a standby substation.
Residents were critical. Puneet Pahwa, RWA general secretary of Sector 45, said supply in his area was hit from 8pm and blamed crumbling infrastructure. Kusum Sharma, Chairperson of Sun City RWA in sector 54, said long summer outages have become a yearly problem. Dhruv Bansal, administrator, DLF Residents’ Welfare Association, called for upgrades.
Officials said the lone government mortuary near Sector-12 also lost power, raising fear of bodies decomposing in the heat.
