News: GMDA Awards 200 MLD Water Pipeline, Basai to Shankar Chowk-21-05-2026
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has awarded the contract for a master water pipeline to improve supply to residential areas along the Dwarka Expressway and to Palam Vihar, Sector 23, Udyog Vihar and DLF Phases 2-3, which lie at the tail-end of its network, officials familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.
The 1600mm line, with a capacity of 200 million litres per day (mld), will run from the Basai treatment plant to Shankar Chowk through Dwarka Expressway, Palam Vihar Road, Sushil Aima Road, Old Delhi Road, Udyog Vihar and DLF areas. GMDA will spend Rs 54 crore on the 20-kilometre pipeline.
Executive engineer Abhinav Verma said work will start next month and take one and half years. Expected demand in the area is around 141mld for the next couple of years. In that period a new treatment plant at Basai will become operational, and more raw water will come from the Gurugram water channel, which will be reconstructed by then.
Officials said these areas face shortages every summer. Verma said the line will be linked to other master pipelines to keep water flowing during a disruption or leakage.
He added that the missing pipeline under Dwarka Expressway has been laid, completing the network from the Chandu Budhera plant to the Sector 72 boosting station. It will soon be operational and supply sectors 76 to 80.
Gurugram’s overall demand is 900mld. GMDA supplies 670mld and plans to reach 970mld by 2029.
