News: Haryana to Map Every Drain Flowing into Yamuna by Drone-19-05-2026
Haryana will carry out zone-wise drone surveys to map all drains and sub-drains discharging into the Yamuna and to monitor water flow and quality, officials said in Chandigarh on Tuesday. The aim is to identify pollution hotspots and strengthen monitoring at source, on the lines of surveys under way in Delhi.
Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) Chairman Vinay Pratap Singh announced the surveys. They form part of the state’s action plan on sewage treatment, industrial waste management and real-time monitoring of drains, intended to rejuvenate the river and cut pollution entering Delhi through inter-state drains.
Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi reviewed the strategy on Tuesday, an official statement said. The meeting looked at strengthening sewage treatment, lowering biochemical oxygen demand levels and strict monitoring of industrial discharge. It also reviewed implementation of Ministry of Home Affairs directions on sewerage and industrial waste, and measures for Drain No. 6, Mungeshpur Drain, Bupania Drain and Palam Vihar Drain.
The state has 90 operational sewage treatment plants (STPs) with a combined capacity of 1,518 million litres per day across 34 towns. Four STPs of 170 MLD are under construction and nine covering 227 MLD are being upgraded. Nine new STPs with 510 MLD capacity are planned.
For industry, 17 common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) with 184.5 MLD capacity are running. Two CETPs of 19 MLD are being upgraded and eight new ones of 146 MLD are proposed.
The HSPCB has prepared an action plan covering STPs, CETPs and drain tapping, with timelines from December 2025 to December 2028. The state has set water quality targets under the Yamuna Action Plan-2019. It also plans in-situ treatment on all major drains in coordination with the Irrigation Department.
Additional Chief Secretaries Sudhir Rajpal and Anurag Agarwal and HSPCB Member Secretary Yogesh Kumar attended the meeting.
