News: Illegal Parking Jams Old Gurugram Junctions-17-05-2026
Peak-hour congestion near Sohna Chowk, Dayanand Saraswati Marg and Basai Road continues to trouble residents of Gurugram’s older sectors, who blame unregulated traffic, roadside parking and e-rickshaws blocking free left slip lanes.
Residents and commuters also alleged signal jumping, wrong-side driving and vehicles halting near intersections. Sagar Anand, a business owner at Pataudi Chowk, said two-wheelers and e-rickshaws occupy the free left lanes while heavy traffic from Jail Road, Khandsa and Sadar Bazaar merges there. He sought streamlining measures and alternative parking. Commuter Mahesh Kumar said jaywalking and wrong-side driving rise in the evening between Sohna Chowk and Civil Lines.
In a spot check on Sunday, HT found vehicles making illegal U-turns at the Basai-Pataudi Y-junction near the City Bus depot to reach Hero Honda Chowk. Resident Ravi Kumar said canter vans and e-rickshaws use the merging point as an interchange. He added that sewage work near Civil Hospital caused a jam up to Basai Chowk late on Saturday night.
A senior traffic police official said that congestion was cleared by around 8pm, and that signal violators at Pataudi and Sohna Chowk are fined through manual checks and cameras. Police data show 3,612 commuters were fined for wrong-side driving and 581 vehicles towed for illegal parking in the first two weeks of May.
Officials said diversions from Old Railway Road to Mahavir Chowk have eased movement near Agrasen Chowk and the railway station, and alternate parking is being worked out for Sadar Bazaar. A senior MCG official said action against encroaching vendors near Mahavir Chowk has been stepped up following an April District Road Safety Committee direction.
