News: Rs 440 Crore Sweeping Project Cleared for Gurugram-11-05-2026
The Urban Local Bodies (ULB) department has given administrative approval to a Rs 440 crore mechanised and manual sweeping project for Gurugram, even as sanitation workers of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) remained on strike for the tenth day running.
The city will be split into two clusters. Zones 1 and 2 make up Cluster 1, for which Rs 200 crore has been approved, and zones 3 and 4 form Cluster 2, with Rs 240 crore. Tenders for five years of sweeping operations have been floated.
HT had reported on March 12 that MCG planned to divide the city into 5,000 square metre blocks with one sanitation worker for each. Additional commissioner Yash Jaluka said geographical information system (GIS) mapping is being started to improve monitoring, and poles will be marked so residents know where a block begins and ends and can demand accountability.
Ravinder Yadav, Additional Commissioner, MCG, said the tender would specify the minimum number of workers contractors must deploy in each ward. Officials expect the system to address complaints of staff shortage and irregular cleaning.
The striking workers allege the Haryana government has not addressed their demands. Basant Kumar, president of Haryana Sarv Karamchari Sangh’s Gurugram unit, said they would wait till May 11 and then announce an indefinite strike if nothing changed.
Kalyan Singh of Sector 14 said no one was collecting household garbage and roads were not being swept properly, and urged MCG to find an alternative mechanism. Ward 21 councillor Sonia Yadav said contractual workers were being deployed but the impact was still visible. The matter will be discussed at Monday’s MCG house meeting, where officials said it would be a key agenda item.
The disruption has also raised concern ahead of a likely surprise inspection by the Swachh Survekshan team later this month. Residents are being encouraged to give online cleanliness feedback on the Swachh Bharat Mission portal.
