News: Sohna Road Sinkhole After Sewer Collapse Near Subash Chowk-07-05-2026
A section of Sohna road near Subash Chowk caved in on Wednesday when a master sewer pipeline under the surface gave way, officials said. It is the sixth such incident on the stretch in three years.
The cave-in was reported around 3.30pm near SD Adarsh Vidyalaya in Sector 47. An eyewitness estimated the damaged portion at 10 to 12 feet wide and nearly 20 feet deep. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials said their team found a sinkhole nearly 10 feet wide.
NHAI barricaded the spot and closed about 100 metres of one lane on the Gurugram-to-Sohna carriageway as a precaution. Highway officials said no vehicle or commuter was affected. A senior NHAI official, who asked not to be named, said GMDA had been informed and repairs would be done in coordination with it.
Authorities said the sewer line, maintained by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), was laid around 30 years ago and is dilapidated. NHAI project director Yogesh Tilak said the matter had been taken up with GMDA and contractor details sought. The sewer line will be fixed first and the road relaid afterwards.
Last year, GMDA entrusted NHAI with strengthening the pipeline through the CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) method at GMDA’s cost. NHAI’s estimate of more than Rs 90 crore was cut to Rs 68 crore after GMDA sought a revision.
GMDA chief engineer Hemant Kumar said the authority would ask NHAI to expedite the work.
